Looks like an old Hot Wheels.

It really needs to be restored. It’s already been molested, and is no longer original or authentic so there’s no sense in trying to “preserve” it.

Absolutely beautiful. I would love to see this car in person.

I wouldn’t restore it. It’s condition right now is an indicator of what kind of a life it’s lived, and how damn reliable their first ever car was.

I think you’re right. That is not just an original patina.

If it were not so rare I would agree. But it would be worth more historically if it were put back to how it would have looked new. As it sits it’s just a rare car which has been neglected and bodged, and so not a particularly good example of what it was.

Only a few years ago a pre-war Beetle was discovered in Lithuania in a similar state:

Although there are only two or three pre-war beetles known to exist, it was wisely decided to restore the car to its original appearance. As it sat - it was pretty worthless as an example of a pre-war VW. Yeah it is one. But it’s been messed with so much it’s no longer representative of one.

If perhaps it had been found in a worn, but original condition, I’d say it’d be better off preserving it as is. But since it’s already been messed with so much, it would serve better to have it put back to how it would have originally been.

That’s fascinating. Just the fact that they left it in “as found” condition makes it even better. Great post, Steve.

It’s not clear in that article, but for a while it was believed that there was not a single AA left in the world. So glad they found one, even if it’s as bad as this one. To think such a significant car could be lost completely.

They probably feel that because it is so rare, they shouldn’t touch it beyond stabilizing it. That car is rough, start taking stuff off and replacing it with new components to restore it, and you are going to lose a lot of what’s original as well, and end up with with a replica that has some components from an original.

I would imagine that a sympathetic restoration would be possible. Recreating proper wheels since they’re missing anyway - recreating the proper grill since it is missing anyway. If what is there isn’t original, there’s no excuse not to replace it with something more accurate.
